A full glossary of names, breeds and places appears at the back of this book. Many of the characters’ names have a significance, and readers might enjoy finding out what that is. Much of the action takes place in the English West Country, in places much loved by the author: Stonehenge (as she remembers it in the 1950s!), Tarr Steps on Exmoor, Culbone Church, also Exmoor, the caves at Cheddar, the Chalice Well, Glastonbury, Corfe Castle, Knightshaye, and the Cerne Giant. In the House of Bast many of the cats live in special palaces and residences – here are some of them (an asterisk denotes a royal residence). Click on each image to the right for enlarged view.
